Isolation Leads To Lack Of Integration

Ethnic minorities in Georgia suffered greatly during and following the August 2008 conflict with Russia.

In 2010, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance published a report monitoring some positive initiatives in the country aiming at fighting discrimination on the grounds of nationality or national or ethnic origin, race, colour, language and religion.

There were key positive developments concerning the work of the Georgian Ombudsman, and the adoption of the National Strategy for Tolerance and Civil Integration, which aims to preserve ethnic minorities’ culture and identity, promote equal opportunities and the effective participation of ethnic minorities in all fields of life. At the same time, ECRI’s report identified that contact between the majority population and ethnic minorities are limited due to language barriers and infrastructure problems that contribute to the isolation. Minorities are still facing widespread prejudice, harassment and violations and are not appropriately protected by the police
