The Gate To Europe

Due to its geographical location, Greece serves as the main entry point for migrants from Asia and Africa crossing undocumented into the European Union. The country has about 800 000 legally-registered immigrants, but undocumented immigrants are estimated to exceed 350 000. With a recession lasting 5 years, exacerbated by austerity measures, resentment against immigrants, who are portrayed as taking resources, jobs, and opportunities meant for Greeks, is at crisis levels. The fascist Golden Dawn party has capitalised on this phenomena, surpassing the 3% threshold in Greece’s Parliamentary elections needed for representation. Stories about violence against immigrants are alarming, sometimes gruesome, and growing in number.
